This two-volume course is for chief engineers, naval architects or surveryors of other disciplines who wish to become surveryors of the machinery of ships, to verify compliance with the requirements in IMO conventions regarding the safety of ships, navigation and life at sea.
It covers the requirements of initial, annual, intermediate and periodical surverys, as specified in SOLAS 74 and related documents, but does not cover the survey of chemical tankers, gas carriers, special-purpose ships or mobile offshore units. There is a separate compendium which includes extensive information on preparation for surveys, methods of machinery surverys, non-destructive testing, survey of machiney systems, of boilers and pressure vessels, of steam turbines, of diesel engines, of gearing arrangements, of shafting arrangements and of steering gear systems.
